여름 방학에 자녀에게 권장할 일: 책읽기 3
긴 여름 방학을 지내고 가을 바람이 몇 조각 흐미하게 불어 창밖의 나뭇가지가 산들거리기 시작하고, 우리네 보통 사람들이 짧은 소매들을 긴 팔 셔츠로 차츰 바꿔 입을 때쯤이면, 흔히들 “가을은 천고마비의 계절임과 동시에 우리네 마음을 살찌우는 독서의 계절이다”라는 문구들이 여기 저기에서 나부낀다. 하지만, 우리 자녀들에게 가을은 책 읽기에 너무 바쁜 시기이다. 각종 운동을 비롯한 과외활동이 시작되고 AP 과목들을 포함한 어려운 수업들이 막 시작하면 눈코뜰 새가 없으니 자기가 좋아하는 책을 읽기는 언감생심이다. “눈을 뜰 수 없으니 오디오북이라도 들어야 할 수 밖에 없지” 하시며 농을 거시는 분도 있을 정도이다. 그러니, 겨우 학교의 수업에서 필수로 요구하는 책 정도로 만족하는 것이 현실적이고 현명한 방책이다.
이런 관점에서 필자는 틈만 나면, 여름이야 말로 긴 방학을 맞은 학생들에게 책 읽기에 가장 좋은 계절이라고 입에 침을 튀긴다. 학교 공부의 중압감이 거의 없고 자유 시간이 많으니 책읽기에 더 좋은 시기가 어디에 더 있으랴? 너무 무리할 경우 등짝과 엉덩이에 날 땀띠 정도는 책 읽기의 희열이 고쳐 줄 것이므로. 그래서 “올 여름 방학은 꼭 좀 우리 아이들이 좋은 책들을 좀 읽어 주었으면” 하는 소망이 있다. 이러한 소망을 실현시키시려면, 우리 아이들에게 책 읽는 습관을 들여 주는 것이 최상이다. 어린 자녀일 경우, 잠을 청하기 전의 몇 분을 같이 이불 속에 누워 몇 페이지의 동화책을 읽어 주시거나, 읽은 내용을 가지고 서로의 의견을 이야기 하느라 모닥불에 굽던 마시멜로가 다 녹아 내리는 것도 잊는다면 그 보다 더 달콤한 가족 시간이 어디 있으며 이 보다 더 살가운 독서 권장법이 어디 있겠는가?
이번 주에도 초등학교와 중학교에 다니는 학생들을 위한 양서를 추천해 드린다. 지난 주에 이어, 뉴베리 메달을 수상한 양서들의 목록 중 지난 주에 빠트린 것들을 소개하니 참조하시기 바란다. 잘 아시는 것처럼, 뉴베리 메달은 1922년부터 그 전해에 출간된 아동 도서 중에서 가장 출중한 작품을 한 권 선정해 수여하는 메달이니 우리 아이들이 읽기에 안심해도 되는 고전들이라 할 수 있다:
