여름 방학 잘 보내기 4

이미 이 지역의 많은 공사립 초중고등학교가 졸업식과 종업식을 마치고10주가 넘는 긴 여름 방학에 들어갔다. 여름 방학 동안 우리 자녀들이 읽을만한 책들의 리스트를 소개하고 있는데, 지난 주에 이어 이번 호에는 초등학교 고학년 학생들로부터 중학교 학생들이 읽으면 좋을 책들의 리스트 두번째를 소개한다.

지난주에 말씀드린 것처럼, 다음에 소개하는 책들은 1923년 처음 시작한 이래 매년 그 전해에 출판된 아동 도서들 중의 백미를 뽑아 시상하는 뉴베리 어워드를 받은 책들이다. 이 책들을 자녀들에게 읽도록 권유할 때, 무조건 읽기를 강권하기 보다는 부모님께서 먼저 읽은 후에 또는 최소한 온 라인에서 그 책들의 개요를 파악하신 후에 이러 이러한 책인데 한 번 읽어 보겠니라고 권유한다면, 보다 더 알찬 소기의 목적을 달성할 수 있을 것이다. 물론 자녀가 책을 읽은 후에 같이 마주 앉아 흥미 있었던 부분이나 이해가 잘 안되는 부분들에 대해 서로 이야기를 나누어 본다면, 자녀와의 공감대를 형성하는 좋은 기회도 될 것인데, 전체 목록은 http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newberymedal/newberywinners/medalwinners.cfm을 접속해 찾아 볼 수 있다.
